This organisation is working on a number of projects aimed at protecting the environment and, more particularly, the threatened extinction of the Mediterranean Monk Seal. Their projects put a special accent on the ecological balances of the sea and coastal areas as well as the interaction of the population and nature in the region. Their projects are funded by the European Union and the WWF. (www.sad-uwrs.org) WINPEACE (Women’s Initiative for Peace)
The Women’s Initiative for Peace organisation, set up by Margaretha Papandreu to enhance peace in the Aegean region, is conducting a project in three villages on the peninsula. This has resulted in the creation of the Karaburun Women’s Agricultural-Tourism Cooperative. This cooperative rents rooms to tourists in the villages and produces typical regional food products using organic ingredients. (www.karaburunkadinlarikooperatifi.com) Organic farming The ecological way in which the villagers have been farming over the millennia, has inspired the local authorities to seek the official recognition of the region as an ecological products producing area. Part of the olive oil production has already obtained the official Organic Farming Certificate. This project is partly funded by the UNDP. (www.karaburun.gov.tr) Karaburun District Government
The Karaburun Local Agenda 21
The Karaburun Local Agenda 21 is a platform, where local and regional authorities, civilians and universities together explore local and regional problems to try to find proper solutions for them.
